"Return to Forever", aka "The Price is White", aka "V E G A S"

I haven't posted in forever.. But.. I saw this story that was so postworthy that I simply could not deny it (apart from the fact that I haven't posted in over a month?)

It's about this show the alphabet was going to show but didn't -- STSers, Afro-, Latino-, Homo- and other various Ethno-lectuals, this is your chance to comment your heart away.. It was called "Welcome to the Neighborhood".. Please discuss

Finally.. My brother-in-law is hooking me up with a partially-paid break that I was not going to take.. but in all truth, must be taken.. to.. well.. I gave it away in the title.. It's the first time I've gone since being on the East Coast, which is AT LEAST five years, and will probably the last time I go in as much time.. With my handcuff starting a full-time corporate job and hopes of a third mouth to feed in the coming years this is the last shot to make some Vegas memories with our trio (used to be a quartet, which is sorely missed, but that was another time and is another story..)

Anyway.. ta ta for later and enjoy -- and let's hear what you think:

I was going to post the article, but upon rereading the post noticed the type that said "The reproduction, duplication, distribution, photocopying, publication, modification, copying or transmission of
material from DiversityInc.com is illegal and strictly prohibited unless you have written consent from this site.
Violators will be prosecuted."

So sorry.. I'll see if I can find the story elsewhere..

I heard about the show on an NPR commentary yesterday and through your blog, but not anywhere else. From what little I know, I would not be averse to the series' airing in that it may encourage some open discussions between friends about who we are and what we really think of each other. As tough and uncomfortable as it would be, I'm convinced the only way we will improve as a nation is through frank, open dialogue between individuals, whether it be about political topics, Bush, racism, liberalism, or any other subject people tend to speak passionately about. These days we are so afraid to offend and speak that we risk stagnating and remaining frogs at the bottom of the well. I am not surprised that ABC is shying away from 'controversial' material. Maybe another company will pick it up.

'Course the counterargument to this is to look a Canada. Probably as multicultural as the US, and I bet they would never have thought of creating such a show.

I've been meaning to respond to your comment for a while.. I can't disagree with your point - frank dialogue is necessary to get beyond a certain threshold of racial/ethnic tensions this country has been dealing with for some time now..

But I have kind of mixed feelings about this show.. 1) I probably would have enjoyed watching it -- I suspect part of the reason is to see one's suspicions about wealthy white conservatives' true feelings about difference.. and then the weird, mixed feeling of righteous anger and futility at doing anything about it because those are the people that are 'America' and until people 'like me' (more liberal?, more urbane?, more pigmented?) outnumber them, there seems to be only so much I can do about their attitudes and the power with which they can shape the country in line with those attitudes (see the last two presidential elections)..

That said, part of the argument (or strategy) of the detractors was that the show, or some things that went on in the show, were illegal, violating civil rights laws. I think it would still be a fun show to watch and try to figure out which characters were more or less guilty than others in breaking the law besides the reasons I mentioned above..

Finally, however.. although I am against calling most of the country "stupid" as is the policy of many products of your alma mater and my first post-secondary institution (and I assume others, though I can't speak for those), I realize that.. When the people of the good ole Bush voting US of A see this - are they going to analyze what's going on/view it with a critical eye? We're talking about a country with leaders who thought it was time well spent to mandate "Freedom Fries" in their cafeteria..

But.. I guess that's what open dialogue is for.. to understand one another's perspective.. But I think that television is rather powerful, and I wonder if a show like this would not simply legitimize people's attitudes about "good" neighborhoods and housing discrimination.. I guess those types of people would not be interested in discussion anyway..

Who knows.. But I guess now we won't find out the value (or detriment) of the show since we won't see it..
