Godmother of the Ballers

Penny Marshall (i.e. Laverne), Godmother to NBA B-Ballers?

Who knew?

Exhibit A:this article in SI about "A Midsummer Night's Dream" (Magic has passed it on to Baron Davis and Paul Pierce)..

how long has it been?

Ahh!

So.. it is still technically May, so my previous post will not have been wrong..

Long time no post.. butanyway..

I finished my first year with a few cuts and scrapes.. but hopefully by the start of next year I will be ready for more and a summer's worth of reading, writing, and relaxing sharper..

I don't totally suck..

First time out I got an I.. neither admirable nor fun.. but I found out yesterday that my rewrite was an A.. So my head is still officially above water at least until April or May sometime..

About Last Night

Last night was fun..

* I went to a dinner talk about Einstein and Race last night, though our dinner discussion was largely about other things.. Saw a few good friends there..

* Watched some Project Runway, arguably the best reality contest ever made.. Angeleno (raised or trained) Latinos representing strong on that show, though many are falling off..

* I (my team) won at QUIZZO on my first time out..

The past month: Holiday Recap/A year turns

It's been a month since my last post.. So I'll give the both of you who read this updated..

* I finished the opposite of strong.. Once I get my paper rewrite graded I will *hopefully* be able to say I made straight A minuses..

* About that last post about LA not feeling like home.. I take that back -- it TOTALLY felt like home, and it felt good.. I really need to get my act together regarding my time management.. Half the time I was out there I was writing papers instead of seeing family, having fun.. Hopefully this is a lesson learned for good (yeah right)..

* On a side note -- both of my brothers now live on the WestSide (even though one is actually in the Valley, it's still west).. It was AMAZINGLY EASY to get around by public transportation--that may be because they both live close to Major Streets.. but dang.. And guess what Philadelphians -- base fare is, if I'm not mistaken, 75 cents (that could be totally wrong.. it can't be that cheap - but it is definitely under $2 -- I'll check on that).. SEPTA sucks is not an understatement..

* As usual I took the train from LA to SD (and back).. expensive, but in many ways practical.. and very relaxing and enjoyable..

* Hung out with my younger bro (well.. I'm the oldest, so the second one), which I usually don't get a chance to do.. That was really cool..

If I think of more I'll throw it up here, but that's all for now -- hope everyone's 2006 is thinner and more productive than 2005.. at least I hope mine is..

public art

This is a blog entry I posted at that social networking site that I very often frequent these days, mostly because I have reconnected with a number of high school friends there. Anyways, the title suggests the post is about art, but really I think it's a homesick rant.. Of the three of you who read this blog, I think only one of you has an account at that site, so I'm reposting it here because I think you might enjoy it..
..
..

Philadelphia prides itself on its murals.. I think it claims to have more per square whatever than any US city - my facts are probably not straight on that one and I don't feel like checking (I should be writing a paper).. Butanyway.. needless to say, Philadelphia thinks its murals are hot -isht..

Well.. when I got here I wasn't that impressed.. I don't know if Philadelphia has anything to match one of my favorites:

or this other insanely phattt one..

But.. maybe it's just that the murals evoke a sense of a place -- and until I feel like Philadelphia is home I won't start connecting with its murals.. I don't know.. I don't expect Philadelphia to feel like home.. ever, really.. at this point..
Unfortunately.. L.A. doesn't totally feel like home either anymore..

But by next week this time I will be in a place that, though it isn't where I grew up, generates a sense of being "nowhere" and "somewhere" at the same time, while also really feeling something like home -- if God wants, it just might be home in the long run..

And just a few blocks away from this place will be waiting for me...

Three Things..

for now..

U: almost the end of the term -- many ups and downs, feelings of inadequacy, knowing that this is all typical in the process of grad school.. Hoping that my shortcomings weren't overly frequent or large..

D: PANDORA.. Awesome site, great idea.. If you haven't already tried it, don't hesitate.. though I'm a little bummed that the choices try to stick to the genre, rather than finding things across genres that are similar..

T: Like her or not, doesn't calling a former Stanford Provost a "warrior princess" seem a bit tinged with racism, sexism, or both?

just checking in.. and..oh - wtf?!?

Just checking in -- school is a lot of work..
And.. what the f"*#* is up with Comment Spam? How did that happen? I didn't imagine such a thing existed, but now that I see it it is rather annoying.. When I get time, which will be never, I'll do something about that..

moreso than here (my blog) or any other cheezy time-wasting site, I've been at mi espacio, and getting most of my news from msnbc.com because it's the most eye-appealing, has the most eye-catching headline graphics, and has a good mix of serious and light/frivolous articles.. of course, I'm sure that's because they are tracking me to see which stories I do and don't like.. But CNN.. come on -- I'm rooting for you, but you really need to do something with your site.. it's pitiful -- MSNBC is eating your lunch.. and you know what -- NYT is a way better site too.. That's like my number 2..

Anyway.. until later folks..
